The Training Division is responsible for providing mandatory and supplemental training to department personnel to develop and enhance those skills and decision-making abilities necessary for the successful delivery of services.

The Training Division also maintains officers' training records and certification standards, assists in the Department's hiring process, provides background investigations, and facilitates the Field Training and Evaluation Program for new officers. The Training Division also researches and purchases new equipment and uniform items.

New recruits attend the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training Officer Academy. Each academy consists of orientation and introductory classes to familiarize each new officer with his/her new duties. Classes include, but are not limited to, criminal and vehicle law, sexual harassment, use of force, defense tactics, and firearms training, along with learning Department General Orders.

Veteran officers and personnel also received training on an array of topics including: Less Lethal Munitions, MP-5 (patrol carbine), Range 2000 (electronic firearms "shoot-don't shoot" simulator), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibulator (AED), Confrontational Simulation-use of force decision based skills, Hazmet-Anthrax, Active Shooter (within a school setting), contact cell training, Simunitions and Defense Tactics, Verbal Judo, Radar, Laser, K-9, and Mountain Bike Operations, just to name a few.

The Training Division prides itself on fully trained "in-house" instructors who are responsible for teaching a variety of courses. The Training Division has targeted specific courses to be taught monthly by the Department's instructors. By using "in-house" insturctors, it increases the amount of training to department members, because officers are able to attend courses within the city and while on duty time.

The Beaverton Police Department also hosts classes through the year from nationally recognized training companies. Some of the classes include Interviewing and Interrogation, Field Interviewing, Supervision Skills, and Law Enforcement Spanish.
